Family Fishing Day

When we have a long drive with the kids along the coast we often try to brake up the trip with a good fishing spot. We find a bait shop nearby, buy a small amount of frozen or live bait and head to a dock or the shoreline.

On our latest day fishing day trip we came across a beautiful little park with several docks and shorelines to fish from. And a bathroom too! A perfect spot to stretch our legs, eat some lunch, and take in all the seaside creatures.

The boys use adult size fishing poles. They always have, even since they were itty bitty. This allows them to be able to catch bigger fish, using stronger line and bigger hooks.

We packed a cold lunch and ate it on the dock once our fishing lines got in the water. We brought folding chairs and a wagon to carry all of our fishing gear.

The fishing started slow except for the random black sock that was reeled in. But there was plenty of sealife to observe. We watched pelicans dive over and over again into the water. Manatees swim back and forth under the dock. Dolphins come up to get air and show off their fins. And then the fish began to bite.

We reeled in a southern puffer fish, a catfish, a trout, and some red snapper. I love the anticipation of the boys staring into the water, wondering what creature could be hooked on the line.

As the weather starts to warm, I look forward to many more family fishing days this year. Follow along with us @homesteadonlakeside
