Homeschool U-Pick Farm Visit

Orange u-pick

I’m so thankful our family lives in Florida and has access to u-pick food all year round. As a homeschooling family with a flexible schedule, we try to take advantage of all of the delicious fresh local fruits and vegetables near us. This is beautiful time spent outside together and it gets us all excited about the possible recipes we can try with the local foods.

It’s winter time, and in Florida, that means citrus. Sadly, last year, our favorite small family u-pick farm closed down after three generations. So we found a less quaint, but definitely not less delicious citrus farm to visit in Central Florida.

Pineapple orange

The variety of orange they had ripe and ready for picking is called pineapple orange. It tastes nothing like pineapple but is so sweet and juicy.

Orange blossoms

Strawberry picking is coming soon, and I can’t wait! Here, you can see my favorite no added sugar, no pectin strawberry jam recipe from when we went strawberry picking a few years ago.

Homeschooling has afforded us so many opportunities to be flexible in our learning and go on so many adventures. Picking our food gets the boys excited about what they eat and how they want to prepare and cook it. Leading to a greater palate and practice in the kitchen.

We have been homeschooling for 7 years, and we have learned how to turn every outing or field trip into the perfect learning opportunity. I mean, who just wants to stay home and do math all day?

I hope you enjoyed some photographs from our recent orange picking! Follow along @homesteadonlakeside for some yummy citrus recipes to come!

Loved this! You are providing real life education to your children – information they just won’t get in a school classroom. 🙂
