Homemade Snacks from Scratch

These are some of our favorite homemade snacks when at home during our homeschool day. I try to make snacks that will be healthy, inexpensive, and fun for the boys to eat. The boys will usually eat one to two snacks a day. Sometimes its something simple like chips and salsa and sometimes its something that needs to fill their bellies a bit more like homemade pizza bagels. Follow along as I share some of our favorite homemade snacks from scratch.

Strawberry Vanilla Parfait

Strawberry season is coming to an end here in Florida, so we have been enjoying loads of berries.  This parfait can be made with any fruit or substitute chocolate pudding instead. You can also substitute yogurt instead of pudding. For a quick and easy snack, make a batch of instant pudding the day before and store it in the fridge. Layer the pudding and fruit, then top with shredded coconut.

Pizza Bagel Bites

We usually have a batch of sourdough bagels around the house. Here is my recipe for Water Sourdough Bagels. One of the favorite ways for the boys to eat them is by making pizza bagel bites. For the sauce, I use one, 4 oz can of tomato paste. Add a splash of olive oil, salt, pepper, and dried basil. Heat the seasoned paste over low to medium heat for about 5 minutes, and your pizza sauce is ready. Slice the bagels in half. Layer the bagels with sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese. Then, place in the oven under the broiler for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Air Popped Popcorn

We purchased a Cuisinart Air Popper about 10 years ago, and it’s still one of my favorite kitchen appliances. It’s easy to use, doesn’t take up much space,  and is easy to clean. This is the go-to snack on a busy day with only a few minutes to spare. While the corn is popping, which takes less than 5 minutes,  I put some butter on the stovetop to melt. When the corn is done popping, I toss it with melted butter and salt.

Sometimes, I send the boys outside with their snacks.  This is a perfect snack to send outside with them. I fill up paper containers with salty, buttery popcorn and send them on their way.

Homemade Masa Tortilla Chips

My favorite snack on this list is chips and salsa. These homemade chips are so crunch and salty. They’re better than any store bought chip. You can throw them in a warm, 250F oven for a few minutes to warm them up, and they are reminiscent of restaurant style chips.

Here is the blog post and recipe for how to make these homemade masa tortilla chips. You can make them a few days before, store them in a zip lock bag, then warm them in the oven just before eating.
