I first became acquainted with elderberry syrup shortly after my first child was born nearly 10 years ago. As a new mother trying to navigate the world of childhood sickness, I was searching for something to help fight the common cold. After much searching, I came across the recommendation for elderberry syrup. Black elderberries have been used for years for colds and flu. I started buying pre-made elderberry syrup and loved how it worked, but didn’t love the price. I knew that I needed to start making this natural remedy from scratch. Here is the recipe I make monthly for great immune boosting support. This is not recommended for children under one as it contains honey.
Homemade Elderberry Syrup
Ingredients
~ 3 1/2 cups of filtered water
~ 2/3 cup of dried black elderberries
~ 1 cup of organic honey

Instructions
1. Pour the water into a medium pot. Add the elderberries. Check the elderberries for any stems and remove.
2. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce to a simmer for about 1 hour. Until the liquid has reduced almost by half.
3. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly so it can be handled.
4. Pour through a fine strainer into another pot or glass bowl to remove the berries.
5. Discard the cooked elderberries.
6. Add honey to the warm mixture and stir until combined.
7. Once the honey is combined well, strain the liquid into a large glass Pyrex for ease of pouring.
8. Pour into a Mason jar or brown glass jar for storing.
9. Store in the fridge for up to a month.

We take approximately 5ml of elderberry syrup one to two times per day for immune boosting maintenance. If we become ill, we take it three to four times a day until the illness is gone.
