Charlotte Mason ABC’s

“A” for gate

Teaching my boys to read has been my greatest joy as a homeschooling parent. Being able to teach them through living books and inspirations of the Charlotte Mason teachings has given me the confidence to show them great literature, character, art, and phonics. We start each week with a letter of the alphabet and a corresponding living book. I draw a character/scene from the story in letter form on the blackboard. Once we’ve read the story, they draw a scene from the story in their journal, narrate the story to me verbally, and then copy some of their narrated sentences into their journal.

Some of my favorite living books to use for these ABC lessons are from Beatrix Potter.

Here are some of the blackboard drawings to accompany our living books.

“C” for cat
“D” for door
“E” for ears
“F” for fish
“H” for house
“K” for kitten
“M” for Miss Moppet
“N” for Nutkin and “O” for Owl
“P” for pig
“S” for stork
“T” for tree and “U” for umbrella

I also have drawn much inspiration from the Oak Meadow Waldorf Inspired Curriculum.

Wishing you peace and happiness on your homeschooling journey. Check out @homesteadonlakeside to follow along with our home education journey.

These are gorgeous! How fun! I am a huge believer of learning through color and creativity, that’s why I started making Latin coloring books- simple creative ways to introduce Latin vocabulary to kids.
