Maple Cardamom Breakfast Sausage Patties

This savory and slightly sweet breakfast sausage is full of warm spices perfect for an autumn morning. Follow along as I make my favorite maple cardamom breakfast sausage patties.

I started on my homemade cooking journey when my husband and I got engaged but struggled for several years. I didn’t like grocery shopping. The flavors of my foods were just okay, and many recipes I followed to a tea didn’t even work out.

I was busy working 60 hours work weeks as a speech pathologist and didn’t have the energy to make a meal. I just wanted to be fed. After quickly burning out and realizing I’d much rather slow down and take care of my husband and son growing in my belly, I made a change. I reduced my work hours to part time, even though I was bringing in more income than my husband at that time, we both decided to start living more simply so that I could be home more.

Learning to Cook and Failing

I tried and tried at my homemade cooking journey.  I failed almost every time. Then, by the time our second son was born, my husband and I decided to cut back even more financially so I could stay home full-time.  Now, I had four mouths to feed.  I had to figure this cooking thing out.

I was looking to lose the baby weight from my second pregnancy and started to look into healthier foods. My cooking practice started to pay off. More of the things I cooked were less awful.  I became more aware of what flavors tasted good together. I realized that if I ate things that were homemade, it was healthier.

Not Giving Up

When our second son was 6 months old, I challenged myself to make 30 days of meals 100% homemade. The baby weight fell off, and I felt better than ever. I had more energy than I had in years, and I was nursing an infant and had a 1 year old running around. You would think I would be more tired.

This gave me inspiration to ramp up my homemade cooking skills even more, and 12 years later, I haven’t looked back.

This breakfast sausage recipe came out of those 30 days of homemade meals all those years ago. One of the weeks I decided to cook only Indian food and I was introduced to cardamom. Now it’s one of my absolute favorite spices.

Still Learning

I’m still learning, but I have figured out how to see the beauty in learning to cook. I still mess up. My boys are the first to tell me when something isn’t very good and the first to tell me when somethingis the best thing they’ve ever eaten. It’s great to have built-in honest critics.

I hope you enjoy these maple cardamom breakfast sausage patties as much as my family does! Paired with some skillet fried eggs and a piece of sourdough toast. It makes quite a delicious and hearty breakfast.

Making sourdough has also been part of my homemade cooking journey. Check out my post here on how to create your own sourdough starter and start your homemade food journey.

Maple Cardamom Breakfast Sausage Patties Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of ground pork
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp of cloves
  • 1/3 cup of maple syrup
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp of butter for frying

Maple Cardamom Breakfast Sausage Patties Recipe:

Start by mixing together the meat, syrup, and spices. Gently roll together 8 to 9 balls of sausage mixture. Then slightly flatten the balls into a patty shape.

Preheat the skillet over medium heat with 1 tbsp of butter. When the pan is hot, add the patties, cooking 4 to 5 patties at a time. Flip the patties once they have browned on one side (cooking about 5 minutes). Once the patties have been flipped, reduce the heat to low/medium. If the oil is splashing too much, reduce the heat to low. Cook for about another 5 minutes.

Move the cooked patties to the side of the pan so they stay warm. With the heat on low/medium, add the remaining patties to the skillet. Cook and flip until no longer pink inside.

You had an Indian cooking week. I call them, kicks. It’s a real kick to become so passionate about making great tasting, healthy food for the family. I say, it’s kind of a way to explore and appreciate other cultures through cooking. I kick around so much, maybe I played soccer in a past life!
