Gerting ready for today, day 1 of our 5 day spring cleaning, we made a trip to Costco to pick up two large bags of OMRI organic soil, picked out our seeds to be planted, and pulled out the wheelbarrow and trimming sheers. If you’d like to join us on our homestead spring cleaning, check out my last post with my favorite cleaning materials recommended.

At home, the boys helped me weed the garden beds and removed any sticks. Along with trimming any dead branches from the azalea bushes and trimming our crape myrtle trees.

After preparing the garden beds, we put down a layer of fresh soil and mulch. We often use oak leaves for much. Since we have so many trees with our backyard connecting to the forest, leaves make an easy and free mulch.

We have a stash of seeds to select from. I like to pick up seeds at the end of the season when they go on sale. I have kept seeds too long, like years, and those are really difficult to get to sprout. But I find that within 1 to 2 years of purchase and the seeds still work great.

Sometimes, I get plant starts, like for onions, tomatoes, and peppers. It’s nice to do a variety of seeds and plant starts, especially for the kids, so that there are somethings that they don’t have to wait for quite as long to harvest food from their hard work.

We spent about three hours working in the beautiful Florida sunshine this morning, preparing the garden.

I hope you will join us tomorrow for day 2 of our homestead spring cleaning checklist.
